Kennedy | Theodore Roosevelt | Helen Keller 이름만 들어도 알만한 영향력 있었던 미국인들. 이들의 공통점은? 아셨겠지만 다들 하버드 졸업생들 이죠. ​ 학교 중퇴자만 하더라도 빌 게이츠(Bill Gates)나 마크 저커버그 (Mark Zuckerberg)이에요. ​ 유학생을 둔 학부모님들의 영원한 로망. 명문대의 상징 그 자체, 하버드. ​ 뛰어나고 특이한 학생들 사이에서 정체성을 지키기란 쉽진 않은 일이긴 하지만 하버드 학생들이라면 해낼 수 있겠네요. ​ 지난 몇백 년 동안 별다른 수식어가 필요 없고 이름 자체만으로 수식어가 되는 학교에요. 미국이란 나라의 첫 대학교기도 하고요. U.S. News and World Report 랭킹 기준 1위 자리를 빼앗긴진 몇 년이 되었지만, 여전히 학교의 명성이나 퀄리티를 결정하는 데에 있어서 기준점이 되는 그런 학교에요. ​ 명성 있는 프로그램 Economics (경제학) Government History (역사학) East Asian Studies (동아시아학) African and African American Studies (아프리칸 Biological Sciences Applied Mathematics Computer Science 컴퓨터 공학 ​ 최상의 퀄리티, 그 자체 물리적인 시설부터 시작해서 교수진, 그리고 학생들까지 최상급의 기준에 부합하는 것들만 고집 해요. 하버드는 교수들에게 종신 재직권을 주는 데에 있어선 이미 명성이 익히 알려진 교수들에게만 그 자격을 주고 있어요. 따라서 정말로 자기 분야에서 "스타"라고 할만한 사람들만 모일 수밖에 없어요. 어느 학업적인 분야든 그 분야의 일인자를 논할 때 "하버드 교수"라는 타이틀이 붙는 게 흔한 일이고, 티비에서도 정계에서도 하버드 교수들이 즐비해요. 그런데 이런 부분이 단점이 될 수는 있어요. 이따금씩 상대적으로 학부 학생들에게 신경을 쏟지 않는다는 비평을 듣기도 하거든요. 교수들이 적어도 한 개의 학부 과목을 가르치긴 하지만, 학부 교육에 치중하는 작은 대학과는 다르게 학생들이 주도적으로 기회를 찾아 나서지 않는 이상 교수님들과 교류할 수 있는 기회가 적을 수 있어요. 이전 글에서 다뤘던 프린스턴 대학 과는 사뭇 다른 점이라고 볼 수 있어요. "교수님들과 교류할 수 있는 기회를 만들 수는 있지만, 학생이 주도적으로 찾아 나서야 가능합니다." 하버드 대학교 생물학과 학생 1970년 대에 대학교 커리큘럼의 개혁에 앞장섰던 하버드가 가지고 있는 코어 커리큘럼은 네 가지의 부분(1. 미학 & 문화, 2. 윤리와 공민학, 3. 역사, 사회, 개인, 4. 과학과 기술)에서 필수적으로 코스를 요하고 있어요. 그에 덧붙여서 양적 추론과 부서 코스 한 가지를 Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, 그리고 Natural Sciences and School of Engineering and Applied Science에서 들어야 해요. ​ 하버드의 가장 유명한 프로그램들은 교내에서도 크기가 큰 프로그램들이에요. 경제학이나 정보학, 컴퓨터 공학, 심리학, 역사학, 그리고 생물학이 높은 비율의 전공자를 가지고 있지만, 꽤 많은 한국 문과 학생들이 타겟으로 하는 동아시아학도 미국 전역에서 최고라 볼 수 있어요. 1학년생들은 여러 가지 분야에서 코스를 듣도록 학교에서 장려해요. 73%가 넘는 수업들은 스무 명이 안 되는 작은 수업들이지만, 많은 학생들은 수업이 교수진이 아닌 석박사 학생들이나 teaching fellow들이 가르친다는 것에 대해서 불만을 가지고 있다고 해요. 하지만 반면에 저명한 석학이 아닌 강사와 수업을 하는 게 질문을 하기엔 좀 더 수월한 면이 없지 않아 있을 수도 있다고 생각해요. ​ 하버드의 학생들 하버드의 강점은 뛰어난 교수진과 학교에서 제공하는 리소스(resource)라고들 이야기하고, 의지가 있는 학생들에겐 무한한 가능성이 있는 학교라 할 수 있어요. ​ 그렇지만 하버드의 가장 큰 강점은 아무래도 학생들 그 자체라고들 많이 이야기해요. 워낙 뛰어난 학생들이 많다 보니 서로에게 배울 것들이 너무나 많다고 해요. 하버드생 사이에선 "the hardest thing about Harvard is getting in"이라는 말이 있는데, 풀어서 이야기하자면 하버드 생활 중에선 입학이 가장 어렵다는 이야기에요. 하버드생들 이야기로 종합해서 이야기하자면 수업이 너무 어려운 경우는 상당히 적고, 하버드에서 낙제하는 건 있기가 어려운 일이라 해요. 수업이 정말 어려운 다른 연구대학보다는 상대적으로 경쟁도 적은 편이라 하지만, 하버드에 와서 자신보다 뛰어난 학생들 옆에서 수업하면서 상대적인 박탈감을 느끼는 학생들도 심심찮게 있다고 해요. ​ 미국 대학 졸업하기가 '어려운' 이유 : 네이버 블로그 (naver.com) 전형적인 하버드 학생상이 뭐냐고 묻는다면, 한 가지 답변을 하긴 어렵지만, 공통적으로는 에너지와 야망이 넘치는 학생들이라고 입 모아 이야기해요. 하지만 그 안에선 상당히 다양한 흥미와 전문분야를 가진 학생들이 모여있어요. 정계에 진출하고 싶은 입담 좋은 학생들부터 시작해서 파격적으로 튀는 미술가까지 다방면의 학생들을 만나볼 수 있는 곳이에요. ​ 분위기나 학교생활 거의 대부분의 학부생들은 캠퍼스 내에서 지내요. 그리고 모든 1학년생들은 Harvard Yard에서 같이 지내도록 되어있고, 같이 Annenberg Hall에서 같이 식사를 해요. 저 같은 경우에도 노스웨스턴 (Northwestern) 다니던 시절 1학년생들만을 위한 기숙사에서 지냈었는데, 보통 1학년생들이 같이 지내게 되면 좀 더 열린 마음으로 다양한 친구를 사귀게 된다는 측면에서 학생들에게 좋은 경험이 된다고 봐요. ​ Daniel's SAT Clinic | 본질적인 SAT 공부법 : 네이버 블로그 (naver.com) 1학년이 지나고 나면 12개의 residential house 중 한곳에서 지내게 되는데, 각각 300명에서 500명을 수용할 정도의 크기에요. Residential house마다 학업적인 도움을 받을 수 있는 tutor와 교수가 있어요. 기숙사에 대해선 학생들이 다들 좋은 평을 하는 편이에요. "제 생각에 하버드의 Housing은 하버드 최고의 강점 중 하나에요." 하버드 학생 인터뷰 中 프린스턴에는 Eating Club이 있다고 하면, 하버드에는 "Final Club"이 있어요. 영화 The Social Network에 보면 Final Clubs에 대한 내용이 나오니 흥미가 있으시면 찾아보셔도 좋을 것 같아요. ​ 꽤나 배타적인 업스케일 사교클럽들인데, 극소수의 학생들만 선택받아 가입할 수 있고, 자신들만의 건물을 따로 가지고 있고 학교 내의 사교문화에도 지대한 영향을 끼친다고 해요. 하지만 최근 들어 점점 다양해지고 있는 학교의 풍토에 안 좋은 영향을 미친다고 하여 학교 측에서도 이런 클럽들의 영향력을 줄이려 노력하고 있다 해요. ​ 많은 학생들은 자신들의 흥미와 딱 떨어지는 클럽이나 활동을 찾아서 여기에 많은 투자를 하는데, 잘 알려진 유머지인 Harvard Lampoon부터 80개가 넘는 연극 등이 있어요. 그리고 아무리 비주류의 흥미라고 하더라도 하버드에선 학생들의 흥미를 서포트해 주기 위해 많은 노력을 기울여요. "하버드 스퀘어는 최고의 대학 마을 (college town)이에요." 하버드 학생 인터뷰 中 하버드가 위치해 있는 케임브리지 (Cambridge)라는 또한 방문을 해보시면 "이런 곳이 전형적인 미국 캠퍼스 타운이구나" 느끼실만한 도시에요. 하버드 스퀘어에는 관광과 쇼핑을 위한 곳들도 있지만 정말 특별한 서점과 헌책방들도 많이 몰려 있을뿐더러 많은 연극을 볼 수 있는 곳이기도 해요. 학생들을 위한 가게와 식당, 그리고 술집들이 즐비해요. ​ 합격률: 4.7% 고등학교 상위 10% 학생 비율: 95% 고등학교 상위 25% 학생 비율: 99% SAT 수학 점수 25th percentile (하위 25프로) - 740 SAT 수학 점수 75th percentile (상위 25프로) - 800 SAT 영어 점수 25th percentile (하위 25프로) - 720 SAT 영어 점수 75th percentile (상위 25프로) - 780

프린스턴 대학교는 아이비리그의 Big Three (하버드, 프린스턴, 예일) 중 가장 작은 학교이고, 그에 걸맞게 교수진과 개별 프로젝트를 진행하기에 좋은 학교에요. ​ 공대 프로그램들을 제공하긴 하지만 다른 상위권 대학교들과 마찬가지로 비즈니스 전공은 제공하지 않으며 , 상대적으로 예일이나 하버드보다는 부유한 동네인 프린스턴, 뉴저지의 suburb에 위치해있어서 사뭇 다른 분위기라고 보실 수 있어요. 명성 있는 프로그램: Molecular Biology (분자생물학) Engineering (공학) Computer Scinece (컴퓨터 공학) Philosophy (철학) Mathematics (수학) History (역사학) Economics (경제학) Public and International Affairs (정치외교학과) ​ 프린스턴 대학교는 미국의 상위권 대학교들 중 특별한 점이 있는데, 뛰어난 교수진을 가지고 있는 연구 대학교이면서도 석박사 프로그램이 없기에 교수진이 학생들에게 신경을 쏟을 수 있는 특별한 환경이에요. ​ 인문학에 포커스 + 교수진에게 받을 수 있는 멘토링 프린스턴 대학교는 공대 프로그램, 건축, 공공정책 학교를 가지고 있지만, 본질적으로는 "arts and science" 대학 (한국으로 치면 인문사회부 & 인문과학부)이라고 보셔야 해요 . 학교 전반적으로 이런 Liberal Arts에 대한 중요성을 강조하는 분위기이고, 따라서 기본적으로 들어야 하는 Core requirement들(한국으로 치면 필수 교양과목)이 꽤 있는 편이고, 졸업논문도 필수적으로 적어야 해요. "신문과 티비에서 나오는 교수님 사무실을 찾아가서 일대일로 면담을 할 수 있어요." 프린스턴 대학교 경제학과 학생 모든 학생들은 인식론, 윤리, 역사적 분석, 문학, 양적 추론, 사회적 분석, 그리고 과학과 기술에서 필수적으로 클래스를 들어야 되고, 1학년 때는 70개의 라이팅 세미나 중 하나를 골라서 들을 수 있어요. 세미나 주제는 음악의 물리학부터 시작해서 외계 생명에 대한 주제까지 아주 다양해요. 또, 인문학 학생들 같은 경우에는 3학년 때 교수 한 명에게 멘토링을 받으면서 30 페이지 가량의 논문을 두 개 적어야 돼요. (수업과 별개) ​ 프린스턴 대학교는 다른 대학교보다 학생 수가 적은 것으로 잘 알려져 있고, 다른 아이비리그 대학교보단 제공되는 코스 숫자가 상대적으로 적긴 하지만 높은 퀄리티의 수업들이 그 빈틈을 메꿔줘요. 프린스턴의 수학과 프로그램과 철학 프로그램은 미국 전역에서 최고의 프로그램들 중 하나이고, 경제학이나 역사학, 물리학들도 아주 뛰어나요. (여기서 퀄리티를 이야기함은 교육의 질이나 교수진에 대한 내용이고, 한국 대학교와는 다르게 입학 난이도와 긴밀한 상관관계를 갖지는 않아요) ​ 위에서 이야기했듯이 학생들은 수업 외에도 자신들이 선택한 교수에게 멘토링을 받으면서 논문 작업을 하게 되는데, 많은 학생들은 이 경험이 자신의 대학 생활에서 가장 좋았던 경험이라고 이야기를 많이 해요. "4학년생들은 thesis advisor (지도 교수)와 아주 좋은 관계를 형성할 기회가 있어요." 프린스턴 학생 학교 분위기 프린스턴은 역사적으로 배타성이 강한 학교라고 알려져 있고 현재도 그런 이미지가 없지 않아 있긴 하지만 (1970년도까진 여자들이 입학하지 못했음) 요즘은 다양한 인종들이 오고 있고, 많은 상위권 학교들이 그렇듯이 미래에는 더더욱 다양성을 추구하려는 방향으로 가고 있어요. 다른 아이비리그 학교들이 그렇듯이 문과 중심의 학교였었고, 문과 학생들이 선호하던 학교였지만, 최근 들어 이공계 학생들이나 창의적인 학생을 더 받으려는 노력을 하고 있는 추세라고 볼 수 있어요. "프린스턴 대학교 학생들은 유대관계가 잘 형성되어 있고, 근면하고, 협력을 잘하고, 서로의 활동을 장려해 줘요." 프린스턴 대학교 경제학과 학생 하지만 학생들이 서로 친목을 다지는 데에 있어서는 소득, 출신, 그리고 공립/사립학교를 졸업했는지에 따라서 갈린다고 이야기하는 학생들이 많았어요. 근데 이런 현상은 개인적으로 미국 대학을 나온 저로서는 프린스턴뿐만 아니라 모든 학교에 어느 정도 공통적으로 내재된 특성이라고 생각하는 바에요. ​ 프린스턴 대학교에서는 총 11개의 Eating Club 들이 있는데, 이건 3학년과 4학년생들이 소속될 수 있는 친목회 같은 개념이라고 생각하시면 될 것 같아요. ​ 학생들의 절반 이상은 Eating Club을 조인해요. 다른 학교의 Fraternity나 Sorority와 조금 비슷한 면이 있는데, 남녀 구분 없이 운영된다는 점에서는 달라요. 각 클럽은 Prospect Avenue에 각자의 멘션을 가지고 있어요. ​ 주 중에는 각 Eating Club에 소속된 학생들이 각 클럽에서 식사를 하고, 주말에는 같이 시간을 보내며 어울려요. 11개의 Eating Club 중 5개의 Eating Club은 추첨을 통해서 멤버를 받지만, 나머지 클럽들은 지원 과정을 거쳐야 멤버가 될 수 있어요. Eating Club에 지불해야 하는 비용은 클럽마다 다른데, 가장 비싼 클럽인 Ivy Club 같은 경우에는 일 년에 $10,000 (한화로 약 1200만 원) 을 지불해야 해요. 가장 오래된 Eating Club인 Ivy Club은 1879년부터 시작되었어요. Deferred or waitlisted at your dream school? Don't worry. There's still a chance to upgrade your application. Follow our LoCI guide & message us to view a successful sample letter from our past student. Make sure the school accepts letters of interest (some explicitly say that they do not accept additional materials). See if they accept via email or portal. (some have specific prompts and word count). It should generally be 1 page long otherwise. Thank the admissions officer for reevaluating your application and reaffirm that the school is the best fit & your first choice. State that you would absolutely attend if admitted. You can mention any great impression of the school you have. You can add a figurative hook. Provide new information such as updates on extracurricular activities, any awards won, projects you’ve begun, or improved GPA or standardized test scores (if applicable). If you don’t have any updates since the submission, still try your best to expand & elaborate on your current activities. Explain 2-3 “Why College” traits: location, exclusive factors, compatibility (e.g. the interdisciplinary nature of your curriculum perfectly aligns with my interests…). Include any personal experiences or impression of the school: campus visit, online info session, alumni testimonials. List up programs and activities you want to pursue at college, including major curriculum, study abroad programs, and student clubs. you can have repetitive info from your original app, but make sure it’s more detailed.  Plans for the next 6-9 months before going into college (e.g continue to build my startup by… so I can refine my skills / prep myself for college). You may mention larger career goals (e.g. leading up to pursuing my goal of becoming a changemaker in the engineering field). You may also add a witty, eye-catching ending tied to your intro or hook. Thank the reader again and sign off.
