Many high school students are feverishly churning out essays as college application deadlines approach. Because the essay prompts are so broad and open-ended, proving that you are the candidate most suited for a specific university can be challenging. Feeling overwhelmed at the start is normal. Drawing from my experience, here are a few tips.
Find the Keywords of the College.
Every college has its own distinctive style of applicant they are looking for. Visit the official website and look for recurring keywords. For example, terms like “diversity,” “research,” “interdisciplinary,” “community,” “pre-professional,” and so on—each college may emphasize different strengths. Use these words in your essay to show that you’ve researched the school and that you are a good fit.
Mention Specific Academic Programs.
In addition to listing your intended major and minor, mentioning the college's specific programs is essential. For example, you could refer to newly established programs, overseas exchange options, or double-degree programs. This will show your academic ambition and professionalism.
Research Student Organizations and Clubs.
It’s beneficial to note that you are a well-rounded student interested in sports, arts, or cultural activities and want to be active in student organizations. When you mention a few clubs or campus organizations, do not appear as if your interests are too scattered.
Include Your Perspective.
Discuss any campus visits you’ve made, social media photos you’ve seen, or news you’ve read about the school. You can also talk about the city where the college is located or the area where you might live for the next four years—the architecture of the campus, the local scenery, or even the bustling downtown. You might even mention an esteemed alum. Adding an original and personal touch will help you stand out among the many applicants.
